Conference Themes

Secondary education, the history of which is generally far from being studied as much as primary and higher education, is yet a very rich subject. In the past, secondary education used to give a general education and a common culture to a future social elite. In more democratic societies, where education for all has become an economic asset as well as a right, it had and it still has to adapt to mass education, by diversifying or by offering a new culture, and new methods to pass it on. The historical interests as well as the present stakes of this question have led ISCHE XXIV’s organizing committee to propose the theme of secondary education, in the broadest sense of the word - any post-elementary education aimed at teenagers - without chronological or geographical limits. On the occasion of the bicentenary of the creation of lycées, ISCHE XXIV is organized in France where secondary education - organized and controlled by the state - has long represented the core of the educational system. It may be the starting point of comparative reflections on the following themes:

Political, institutional and administrative history
· The role of the national state, regional and local authorities and churches.
· Coexistence of a public and private sector.
· Strategic, administrative and pedagogical autonomy of schools.

Schools and school communities as subjects of study
· How to deal with schools as a historical subject?
· School community: that of teachers and pupils.
· Sociology and anthropology of pupils: school status, social position, gender.

Teachers
· Recruitment, careers, working and living conditions.
· Teachers as a professional group.
· Secularization, specialization, feminization

Models, courses and curricula
· Social elite and meritocracy.
· The policies of meritocracy: scholarships, rankings, competitive examinations.
· Discrimination and affirmative action.
· Humanistic and realistic models.
